The “Tatev” complex is 1100 years old
In the 10th century Tatev had a population of 1,000 and controlled numerous villages. In the 13th century it owned 680 villages. Tatev also had University built by the support of the Orbelian noble family. The earliest records mentioning the Tatev complex date back to 4 century AD. The main monument is the Church of Pogos and Petros (Peter and Paul) built in 895-906.

The Tatev complex has survived numerous wars and earthquakes.
The "Gavazan" erected in 904 in the yard, near the dwelling premises of the monastery, is a unique work of Armenian architectural and engineering art. This is a pillar, built of small stones. As a result of seismic tremors, and even at a mere touch of human hand, the pillar tilts and then returns to the initial position by this signaling an approaching army or an earthquake.

On the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the establishment of the Tatev complex a conference was held in Tatev with the participation of scientists, archaeologists, historians and state officials.

Minister of culture – Hasmig Boghossian, who was also present at the event, noted that the road leading up to the complex needs to be reconstructed.

As part of the event, by the initiative of the head of the Syunig region, schoolchildren from the Syunik province were christened at the Tatev monestary.
